During the last 20 years of the 20th century, middle managers were a threatened species and many organisations cast aside their middle management teams during downsizing exercises based on Business Process Reengineering. Many of these organisations have now recreated these middle management positions as awareness has grown of the key role that they can and should take in driving business performance in organisations.
Furthermore, they play a vital role in delivering business strategic objectives through managing diverse teams and complex projects. Managing for Excellence is a modular programme that focuses on key issues for middle managers in developing excellent performance in their teams
- Recruitment practice
- Motivating performance
- Managing underperformance
- Developing team capabilities
- Managing complex projects
- Leading teams through change
This programme consists of five modules which can be taken as an integrated programme or as single modules to target a specific business need. Each module of the programme consists of pre-work delivered via e-learning which includes an introduction to the module, an evaluation of the relevance to the manager's needs, exercises to look at specific issues that will be addressed during the module in the context of day-to-day work, articles and case studies.
Two-day workshops are used to explore how managers can enhance team performance through better management of specific issues, and individuals, in their teams. The emphasis is on enhanced understanding of realistic situations and to how manage them most effectively. Case studies and role play are central to each workshop.
Post-workshop implementation is through Communities of Practice and "buddying" with other participants. Communities of Practice are used to address organisational issues while "buddies" provide individual coaching in helping managers resolve their personal team issues.
The five modules are:
- Managing and Motivating Your Team
- Recruiting Excellent People
- Developing Excellent People
- Managing Complex Projects
- Initiating and Responding to Change
